I was nervous. I walked back and forth in our room, while Rebecca watched me with amusement in her eyes.
âYou look like youâre about to go on your first date, and remember I was there when that happened,â she said and laughed.
âThis is serious, Rebecca,â I said. âTwo people are already dead and another one could be on the way there. I just hope that this works. I hope Chloe picks up something on a psychic level that Iâm not able to figure out just by asking the ghosts.â Then Kaneâs words started to echo in my mind. He was currently downstairs at the bar, getting ready for the night ahead. âDo you think I shouldnât have involved them?â
âYou didnât really have a choice in the matter,â Rebecca said.
âThank you for going through all this trouble for me,â Charles said. He was staring out the window at the gathering crowd coming to the inn.
âItâs my job to help you move on, and Iâll do that until you do,â I said. âI just wish we knew more about what weâre walking into. Thatâs why I want you to stay here when we go down there.â
âNot a chance,â Charles said. âThis all started with me. I have to be there to finish it.â
Itâs too dangerous and you know it. Remember what happened last time they got their clutches into you? Maybe next time Henry wonât be so lucky and youâll be stuck in that state. Is that what you want?â
Now it was Charles that started to pace back and forth. âI guess not.â
Just then, Kane returned from the bar. He closed the door behind him, a little harder than was necessary. He looked like he was running away from someone.
âAre you ready?â He asked me.
âAs ready as Iâll ever be,â I said.
âBecause I just saw their van pulling up behind the inn.â
âWhat were you doing out there?â
âWhat do you think? I was waiting for them to arrive.â
âOkay, I guess that makes sense,â I said suspiciously.
âDonât tell me you donât trust me?â Kane said.
âOf course I trust you, Iâm just not sure if I trust myself anymore.â
âWe donât have time for this drama,â Rebecca said. âAre we going or not?â
âYeah, I was thinking about that too. I think it would be best if you stayed behind with Charles.â
âNot a chance, Meredith, and you know it. Iâve been with you since the beginning, Iâm not about to abandon you now. Iâll be there with bells on.â
âI donât doubt your dedication and bravery, Rebecca,â I said. âBut this is different. You saw what they did to Charles. I donât want them to do that to you. If they do, and I canât bring you back from that state, I would never forgive myself.â
âYouâre just wasting your breath,â Rebecca said. âIâm going and thatâs final. You canât stop me.â
Since I wasnât in the mood for another argument, I certainly had enough of that with Kane, I decided to let Rebecca come. Whether it proved to be a colossal mistake or not remained to be seen.
